Runes: Ancient Symbols with a Modern Twist
A rune is more than a letter. It’s a mark that seems to carry a whisper from an older world – one of stone, fire, and hidden meaning. Born as an alphabet in ancient Northern Europe, runes later became linked with magic, divination, and protection, and they still draw in modern witches, Pagans, and spiritual seekers today.
Ancient Origins
Runes began as letters in ancient Germanic writing systems used by various peoples of Northern Europe. Their original purpose was linguistic: they were an alphabet, not magical. The earliest known runic inscriptions date back to around the 2nd century CE, and runes were used for writing names, marking objects, recording memorials, and carving inscriptions on stones and other materials.
The best known runic alphabet is the Elder Futhark, named after its first six letters: F, U, Þ (th), A, R, and K. It contains 24 symbols and was used during the early centuries of the runic tradition. Later came the Younger Futhark, used during the Viking Age, and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, which developed in England.
Only after runes had already been established as a writing system did they begin to take on stronger mystical and symbolic associations. People who used runes lived in a world where writing, religion, magic, and everyday life often overlapped, so it is not surprising that runes eventually came to be linked with protection, power, and ritual use. Some historical sources suggest that runes could be used in magical or protective ways, but these interpretations developed after their original linguistic function.
The word rune itself is related to an old word meaning something like secret, mystery, or whisper. It is easy to see how that connection helped give runes their later magical reputation!
Runes in the Modern World
Today, runes have found a new home among modern Pagans, witches, and spiritual seekers. They may be carved into wood, painted onto stones, or printed on illustrated rune sets.
Modern practitioners use runes in several ways. Some people enjoy learning the ancient alphabets and using them simply as a historical writing system. Others incorporate runes into magical practices, meditation, artwork, talismans, or rituals.
And, of course, there is rune divination.
How Rune Divination Works
When used for divination, runes are usually kept in a small bag or container. The person asking the question draws one or more runes, then considers the traditional meaning of each symbol and how it might relate to their situation.
A single rune can be surprisingly thought provoking. Drawing Fehu, for example, might bring thoughts of wealth, abundance, or resources. Raidho can suggest journeys or movement, while Gebo is often associated with gifts, generosity, and partnerships.
Some readers also use the rune’s reversed position, called a merkstave by some modern practitioners, to explore blocked, delayed, or more challenging aspects of its meaning. Not every rune traditionally has a simple opposite meaning, though, so interpretation can vary between readers.
There are many different ways to perform a rune reading. You might draw just one rune for the day, three runes for a simple past-present-future reading, or use a larger spread to explore a more complicated question.
The important thing to remember is that rune divination isn’t necessarily about predicting a fixed future. Many modern practitioners see it more as a way of gaining insight. The runes can encourage you to look at a situation from a different angle, notice something you may have overlooked, or simply give your intuition a little nudge.
Reading with Intuition
One of the most enjoyable things about working with runes is that there is no single “correct” way to approach them. Historical research can teach you about their origins and traditional meanings, while your own intuition can help you understand what a particular rune means to you.
Think of a rune reading as a conversation between the symbol, your knowledge, and your intuition. The rune isn’t necessarily going to hand you a neatly typed answer with a signature at the bottom. Instead, it may make you pause and think, Hmm… why did I draw that one?
And sometimes, that’s where the real magic begins.
Whether you’re interested in ancient history, Norse and Germanic traditions, modern witchcraft, or simply enjoy the beauty and mystery of these fascinating symbols, runes offer a wonderful way to connect the past with the present. Just don’t expect them to tell you exactly where you left your car keys. For that, you may need a different kind of magic!
