Moon Magic: Dancing with the Moon
The Moon has been inspiring witches, storytellers, gardeners, and stargazers for thousands of years. It seems to pull at the tides, brighten the night, and change its face every few days – so it’s hardly surprising that witches have long worked with its cycles.
Moon magic is really about working with the energy and symbolism of each phase. Rather than trying to force something to happen, you use the natural rhythm of the Moon to help focus your intention. Think of it as magical timing: knowing when to plant, when to grow, when to release, and when to rest.
As the Moon grows from a tiny crescent toward the Full Moon, its energy is traditionally associated with growth, attraction, building and bringing things toward you.
🌒 Waxing Moon — Growing & Attracting
This is a good time for spells and rituals involving:
- Love and friendship
- Prosperity and abundance
- Success and opportunities
- Creativity
- Personal growth
- Starting new projects
Want to encourage something to grow? The waxing Moon is your time to give it a little magical encouragement.
🌕 Full Moon — Power & Charging
The Full Moon is often considered the high point of the lunar cycle. Its bright light makes it a natural time for celebration, intention-setting, divination, protection and charging magical tools.
Many witches place objects where they can receive moonlight overnight. Crystals, jewellery, tarot cards, herbs, jars of water and other magical tools may be left on a windowsill or outdoors in a safe place.
This is commonly called moon charging.
You can also simply hold an object in your hands during the Full Moon and give it a purpose: “May this stone carry peaceful energy when I need it.” The object becomes a physical reminder of the intention you’ve placed into it.
🌖 Waning Moon — Releasing & Clearing
As the Moon begins to shrink, witches often turn their attention toward letting go, banishing, cleansing and breaking unwanted patterns.
This can be a lovely time for:
- Clearing negative energy
- Ending unhealthy habits
- Releasing worries
- Protection work
- Decluttering
- Forgiveness
- Saying goodbye to things that no longer serve you
Sometimes magic isn’t about getting something new. Sometimes it’s about making room for it.
🌑 New Moon — Rest & Begin Again
When the Moon disappears from view, the sky becomes wonderfully dark. The New Moon is traditionally associated with rest, reflection, fresh starts and planting the seeds of future intentions.
You might spend this phase quietly journaling, meditating, planning your next goal or simply taking a break from magical work.
And that’s an important part of moon magic too. Not every phase requires a spell.
🌙 A Little Moon Magic of Your Own
You don’t need an elaborate altar or a cupboard full of mysterious ingredients to work with the Moon. Try keeping a small moon journal and write down what you would like to grow, what you want to release, and what you’re grateful for.
You can charge a favourite crystal, bless a piece of jewellery, sit outside beneath the Full Moon, make moon water, meditate, or simply look up at the sky and take a moment to reconnect with nature.
The Moon isn’t in a hurry – and neither should you be.
Moon magic is about cycles, intention and timing. We grow, we shine, we wane, we rest… and then, just like the Moon, we begin again.
